SFD Participates in Rescue Drill
September 23, 2008
On September 23, 2008, South Fire District firefighters worked with Durham and Westfield Fire Departments to "rescue" simulated victims from a Ferris wheel at the Durham Fairgrounds. This was the first opportunity for our firefighters to participate in such a drill.
Firefighters reviewed rescue strategies as well as the mechanical workings of different carnival rides. Ladder trucks were used to access tall rides and gave rescue personnel a safe platform from which to work.
Though carnival ride emergencies are extremely rare, firefighters must be prepared to deal with these unique situations.
