News Release
New Thermal Imaging Camera ReceivedChairman David Gallitto and Chief Robert Ross are please to report to you that the South Fire District has received its grant for a new Thermal Imaging Camera. The Camera was received through the Federal Commercial Equipment Direct Program. This program provided various equipment directly to fire, rescue and police organizations nation wide.
The camera, valued at $9,000, will be placed in service once all staff have completed in-service training on the unit. This camera is similar to one the department received through a grant several years ago but is much smaller, lighter and technologically advanced than the previous unit. This new camera will be placed on the first due response unit and the older unit moved to the second due unit.
The camera is used to "see" through smoke and allow Firefighters the ability to quickly enter buildings with low or no visibility and locate victims which are lost or trapped. This camera puts the latest technology into the hands of our Firefighters.
